  1. Phoenixville

         Phoenixville

I won’t be in Delaware long,
95 just passes through it
Same way you did through me,
though I know you did not mean to do it
And you love Nora Jones,
she’s on every station lately
Roberta Flack is too,
first time I saw your face, you were my baby

Nothing like a snowstorm on the 13th of February
Valley Forge is beautiful with the white on the hills
No hurry, I’m a day early, for my Valentine’s Day
      in Phoenixville

Main Street rolls across my dash,
Phoenixville in Winter
I wonder why they call it that,
did something burn down here to brick and splinter?
Shops are open, people ‘round,
I think I’ll ask them how they do
Do they really rise up from the ash,
or are they buried in it too

Nothing like a snowstorm on the 13th of February
Valley Forge is beautiful with the white on the hills
No hurry, I’m a day early, for my Valentine’s Day
      in Phoenixville

I keep a red eye on the road
I keep another on the country
          You love Johnny Cash
First time I saw your face, you were my baby

Now we might have a campfire
in a summer down the road
But Pennsylvania leaves me tired,
of long letters, drives, and falling snow
I hope your roses bloom this year,
through the ashes, green and red
Like the ones I cannot send from here,
and would you want them if I did

Nothing like a snowstorm on the 13th of February
Valley Forge is beautiful with the white on the hills
No hurry, I’m a day early, for my Valentine’s Day

© 2003 Michael McNevin. Written in Phoenixville, PA, during an east coast tour, Winter of 2003. The storm broke snowfall records from 1902. The tip of the storm arrived in the Mid Atlantic and then spread north as it widened (not a Nor'easter). The gigs in DC, then PA, then NYC, all barely missed the main dump of the storm by one day. DC had two feet, after I left, PA had two feet after I left. Sunday I had to cancel a trip back down to Philly for a radio spot with Gene Shay, and instead ran north for Mon and Tues to wait out the rest of the storm, at Sonny Oak's place in the Catskills. We took a lot of short walks around the house to keep a trail alive, and shoveled snow from her driveway every few hours so I'd have a car to drive once the snow stopped. Fondly remembered as "Sonny's Work Camp For Wayward Californians". I hear the snowfall records were broken again this week.

PS - I'll see if I can post this song as an MP3 somewhere... I know I should know how to do that...
